Department of Art and Art History
The Art and Art History department is dedicated to cultivating students' artistic knowledge and expression. The department offers majors in art history and studio art, a minor in art, and contributes to two interdisciplinary minors: arts management and entrepreneurship and museum, field, and community education. While some courses are co-taught with faculty from different disciplines from across campus, all of our students are encouraged to make connections between what they're learning in the classroom and their other interests, creating richer, more interesting art or to better understand the interconnectedness of our world. Our curriculum prepares students for careers not only as artists, conservators or art historians, but provides the transferable and real-world skills to help them be successful in whatever they pursue after graduation, from arts administration to policy and activism to business ownership.
Our students further benefit from the college's close proximity to museums, galleries, and art centers in Washington, D.C., Philadelphia, Baltimore, and New York, with at least one field trip to a major art museum offered each semester. Our programming also benefits from the College's Kohl Gallery, which provides a place for students to intern, see professional artists' work exhibited, and hear from them during artist talks.
The Department of Art and Art History offers not only major and minor courses, but works with the teacher certification program, contributes to the first-year seminar (FYS) program, and qualifies for the humanities and fine arts distribution.

Art History Major
The art history major has extensive experiential learning opportunities and unique, topic- and concept-based course offerings that reflect the ever-changing art world and allow for interdisciplinary discussions about art.

Studio Art Major
Art is not only a way of expressing ideas, but also a way of thinking and a profound inquiry into what it means to be human. At Washington College, studying studio art means learning alongside supportive faculty who are accomplished professional artists and dedicated mentors, ready to guide you in your creative development.
