Founded in 1782 under the patronage of George Washington, Washington College was the first college chartered in the new nation. - Approximately 1,400 undergraduate students from 33 states and 22 nations attend WC.
- Slightly more than half of our students are from public schools, 7 percent are minority students; 3 percent are international.
- Of the most recent entering class, 60 percent took Advanced Placement coursework, 57 percent played a varsity sport, 43 percent were members of the National Honor Society, 33 percent had a music background, and 31 percent held a leadership position during their high school careers.
More than 50 students participate each year in the College’s National Model UN and Model African Union programs.
The Douglass Cater Society of Junior Fellows provides nearly $100,000 annually in grants of $500 to $3,000 to support student-designed projects and research activities.
The Sophie Kerr Prize, which recognizes the literary promise of a graduating senior, is the largest undergraduate prize in America. The 2020 winner received a check for nearly $64,000.
The College’s C.V. Starr Center for the Study of the American Experience sponsors the annual George Washington Book Prize, a nationally prominent award for the year’s best work on early American History.
We offer more than 40 study abroad programs, more than any other private college in Maryland.

Under the presidency of Kurt Landgraf, Washington College is governed by a 37-member Board of Visitors and Governors, the Senior Staff, and the faculty of Washington College.
Average class size is 17 students; only 1 in 7 classes has more than 25 students.
A dedicated faculty, committed to helping students discover their passion and purpose, is among the particular benefits of attending this small, liberal arts college on Maryland’s Eastern Shore. Although we’re set in a rural location, our 120-acre campus is only 90 minutes from Philadelphia, Baltimore and Washington, D.C. The main campus sparkles with newly constructed and renovated facilities, and plans are being drawn for a fabulous waterfront campus on the Chester River.

Employees and their families have the opportunity to participate in a number of educational programs:
- Tuition Waiver for Employees: Benefit-eligible employees may take up to two courses per semester
- Tuition Waiver for Dependents: After one year of employment, spouses and dependents of benefit-eligible employees may take courses
- Tuition Exchange for Dependents: After one year of employment, dependents of full-time benefit-eligible employees may participate in the Tuition Exchange Program with any other participating institution. After one year of full-time employment, Washington College will assist in paying educational costs for approved outside educational courses for full-time employees through our Educational Assistance Program.
In addition, the college supports staff development through on-campus workshops and training, and pays for approved off-campus training and conferences.
Faculty scholarship and development is supported through Faculty Enhancement grants, fellowships and sabbaticals.
