The following lists contain a internal and external funding options for students of a variety of majors. See what options may be available for you below!
Internal Funding
Andrew Helms Funds
- For Economics majors/minors.
- Supports internships and experiences.
Margaret Bennett Endowment for International Studies
- For International Studies majors.
- Funds study abroad and travel.
- Students can apply for $500-$1000 to support semester or short term study abroad.
Libby & Douglas Cater Society of Junior Fellow Honor Society
- Open to all majors.
- Must have completed at least three semesters to apply. Requires a 3.5 GPA and clear evidence of leadership.
- Funds support research/experiences outside of the classroom. Last Friday in September is the deadline to join as an apprentice (not eligible for funding). Early February is the deadline to apply to become a full member with rights to apply for funding.
Clarence Hodson Prize
Prize is offered to a sophomore, junior, or senior majoring in the fine or performing
arts, with a preference to a student majoring in music, who has achieved distinction
among Washington College's top scholars Up to $2000.
The Center for Environment and Society (CES) is offering student awards to fund independent learning experiences that foster innovative approaches to understanding human-environment interactions and seek to find sustainable solutions to environmental problems. Open to all students.
- For World Languages & Cultures majors.
- Deadline is December 1 for spring study abroad, or April 1 for summer/fall study abroad.
- Funds to support study abroad.
- For Anthropology majors.
- Funds support experiential work in anthropology or archaeology.
The Conrad M. Wingate '23 Memorial Fellowship
- For History majors.
- Provides up to $1,000 toward the costs of research and/or experiential learning opportunities such as defraying the costs of travel, purchase of research materials and photocopies, microfilm for a History major working on her/his senior thesis. The award may also be used to supplement the income for an otherwise unpaid internship at a historical national park, library, museum, or other appropriate venue. Friends of Miller Library Fellowship
- Open to all majors.
- Funds research in your discipline that utilizes the Miller Library.
Gerda Blumenthal Phi Beta Kappa Award
- Open to all majors. Must be a rising sophomore or junior.
- Funds for research, travel, internship in the Humanities. $1000-$2000. Deadline in April.
Goldstein Program in Public Affairs
- For Political Science and International Studies majors
- Run by Dr. Wade in POL. Provides funds to support experiential leaning $250-$1500. The work must be related to public affairs.
The Guy F. Goodfellow Fellowship in History
- For History majors.
- Provides up to $1,000 toward the costs of research and/or experiential learning opportunities such as defraying the costs of travel, purchase of research materials and photocopies, microfilm for a History major working on her/his senior thesis. Hodson Internship Funds
- Open to all majors.
- Funds to support experiential learning, students engaged in faculty led trips, and internships throughout the year. Deadline is rolling. Application is on the Career Center website. Send any questions to: alampman2FREEwashcoll
- $2,500 grant to conduct student research on any aspect of conflict resolution, broadly defined.
- For any science/math major.
- Provides stipends and a supply budget for summer research with professors at Washington College.
The Louise and Rodney Layton Fund
- For any Science/Math major.
- Supports Toll Fellows and Apprentices who have participated in the Summer Research Program and who will be presenting the outcome of their project(s) at a professional conference.
- For Theatre majors.
- Funds for internships or research.
- For English majors.
- Funds internships and experiential learning in literary endeavors. Up to $1000.
STARR Center Summer Explore Internships
- Open to all majors.
- The STARR Center sponsors about 30 highly prestigious internships at important institutions all over the country every summer. Deadline tends to be early spring.
Warehime Funds
- For Business majors/minors.
- Supports experiential learning outside of the classroom, independent and collaborative research, participation in professional conferences.
William B. Johnson Funds
- For Business majors/minors.
- Supports summer internships and experiences up to $2,500. Most business students who apply received funding.
External Funding
Benjamin A. Gilman Scholarship Program
- U.S. Department of State.
- This is a national award that some WC students win almost every year. Award is about $5000 specifically for study abroad.
- Deadlines in October and March.
- National Security Office.
- National award that funds study abroad in regions critical to U.S. interests. Award is $12,500-$25,000.
- Deadline in January.
- After graduation only.
- Funds tuition and cost of living for graduate studies in the U.K.
Sigma Xi Grants in Aid of Research
- For science research. Up to $1000.
- Deadlines are March and October.
Udall Undergraduate Scholarship
- Funds leadership, public service and commitment to issues related to Native American nations and the environment. Awards are $7000.
