Student Awards and Honors

The Department of Theatre & Dance supports the development of our most ambitious and creative students through merit-based scholarships, student-driven grants, and awards. 

Scholarships

Tim Maloney Theatre Scholarship

Incoming students are invited to apply for the Tim Maloney Theatre Scholarship, renewable annually. Students should make note of their interest in theatre scholarships on their admissions application. A total of three (3) scholarships ranging from $3,000 to $7,500 will be made, renewable annually for four years.

To be considered for the Timothy Maloney Scholarship, you must submit one of the following:

  • Portfolio containing 6-8 images max
    • Each image should be captioned with the project title and each project should have a brief explanation of 50-75 words max
  • A Video of no more than 3 minutes
    • Along with your video, please include a brief written explanation (300 words max)
  • Essay (300-400 words)
    • Prompt: Discuss your passion for theatre and how you hope to learn and grow through pursuing theatre at Washington College

Submissions may demonstrate interest or accomplishment in any theatrical discipline, including performance, design, technical production, management, dramaturgy, playwriting, directing, or any combination thereof.

  • A completed Washington College Application and Timothy Maloney Scholarship Application are due by December 1st
  • Students will be selected to interview by December 10th
  • Interviews will take place the week of December 13th
  • Students are notified of results week of January 3rd

The Constance Stuart Larrabee Scholarship for the Arts

Incoming students with proven talent in visual art, music, dance, or theatre are encouraged to submit a portfolio of work to compete for the Constance Stuart Larrabee Scholarship. Larrabee scholarships are renewable for up to four years, provided the recipient maintains a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.0. Recipients are strongly encouraged to participate in campus opportunities related to the visual and performing arts, but do not need to declare a major or minor in the arts in order to keep this scholarship.

Mary Martin Scholarship

Awarded by the Department of Theatre and Dance faculty to a student majoring in Theatre who demonstrates great dedication in any area of the theatre arts.

Mary Martin (1913–1990) was one of the most iconic performers in Broadway history, celebrated for her unforgettable roles as Peter Pan, Nellie Forbush in South Pacific, and Maria von Trapp in The Sound of Music. Known for her radiant warmth, extraordinary voice, and joyful stage presence, Martin helped define the American musical and inspired generations of theatre artists. Matthew Weir, an alumnus of the Washington College Theatre Department and Martin’s nephew, generously donated this gift in her honor.

Mary Martin Student Grants

This fund provides the opportunity for students majoring or minoring in Theatre to pursue independent learning experiences. Students may apply for a grant to support, for instance, summer internships or research. Applications are due October 15 for winter/spring projects and April 1 for summer/fall projects.

This national dance honor society is open to students who maintain a 3.0 GPA and show outstanding ability in dance technique, performance, scholarship, choreography, literature, and/or production.

Stewart Theatre Award

The Stewart Theatre Award is given annually to a senior who has made outstanding contributions to the College through dramatic and speaking ability. Endowed by Pearl Griffin Stewart, Class of 1905.

The Outstanding Dance Minor Student Award is awarded to a graduating dance minor for excellence in their education, including service activities, scholarship, and artistry.
