Student Opportunities

Throughout your years at Washington, take advantage of the opportunities offered through the theatre major both inside and outside the classroom. Participate in departmental productions, attend conferences, explore theatre from multiple roles, and earn leadership roles in organizations that matter to you. Build your skillset, and your résumé, while making academic and personal connections. All of your experiences will culminate in a Senior Capstone Experience (SCE), a year-long independent research project.

Internships

  • Manage or assist at one of our on-campus shops for scenery, props, costumes, or lighting and sound.
  • Take advantage of the local arts community of Chestertown, working with the local theater, Kent Cultural Alliance, the public art committee, or one of several local galleries.

Research

  • Apply for grants and scholarships to pursue independent learning experiences. Mary Martin Student Grants and Mary Martin Scholarships are available to current students. The Stewart Theatre Award is a prize given annually to a senior who has made outstanding contributions to the College through dramatic and speaking ability.
  • Participate in a departmental production as soon as your first semester. Students are encouraged to try different roles, on or off stage, to discover their interests and strengths. Multiple productions every semester provide plenty of opportunities.
  • Complete a Senior Capstone Experience (SCE). There are three options for the SCE: a traditional research thesis on theatrical criticism, theory or history; a playwriting thesis, writing working-shopping, and producing rehearsed reading of a full-length play; or a production thesis, serving as a dramaturg, stage manager, designer, performer, or director of a production. Those choosing to produce a full-length play will serve as producers and build their team to complete their production.
  • Attend a conference with the United States Institute for Theatre Technology, American Alliance for Theatre and Education, and Literary Managers and Dramaturgs of the Americas.
  • Learn from working artists around the region.
  • Create your own research project. Support, financial or otherwise, is available across campus, including through the Hodson Collaborative Research Program or the Cater Society for Junior Fellows.
