Still Life with Poem
On October 18, 2016, the Literary House Press released its newest poetry anthology, Still Life with Poem: Contemporary Natures Mortes in Verse! We held a launch party at the Rose O’Neill Literary House, featuring readings by contributors James Arthur, James Allen Hall, Leslie Harrison, dawn lonsinger, Dora Malech, and Jason Schneiderman, as well as co-editor Lindsay Lusby. And we debuted our commemorative letterpress broadside, featuring Tara Betts’s poem from the collection, “A Second Plate at Pearl’s Place.”
Details: Poetry. With a tradition that can be traced to Pompeii, the genre of the still life or nature morte has most often been used since the Middle Ages and the Renaissance as a vehicle for symbolism and metaphor, objects serving as stand-ins for philosophical ideas, religious principles, or moralizing messages. In Still Life with Poem, poets were asked to create (or to imagine) their own still lifes and to write poems in response to these thoughtful arrangements of things. And although still life paintings are often viewed as unmoving, quiet works of art, this anthology presents a collection of energetic, urgent voices; these poems speak to current events, the making of art, the domestic, the past, the body, faith, the environment, and the losses we all face. The Book of Scented Things
On October 7, 2014, we released our first trade paperback, The Book of Scented Things: 100 Contemporary Poems about Perfume, the first in a new series of poetry anthologies. We held a book launch party to celebrate at the Rose O’Neill Literary House. We also co-hosted a second launch event on October 29 at the Arts Club of Washington.
Details: Poetry. What if 100 contemporary American poets were sent individually selected vials of perfume, fragrances chosen to reflect the authors’ voices, aesthetics, or writerly obsessions? What if each poet wrote something new in response? The Book of Scented Things collects the results of this strange, aromatic experiment: poems of longing and of childhood memory, poems of place and philosophy and politics, poems about the challenge of writing poems about perfume. This is an anthology whose words will linger on your pulse points long after even the base notes have faded. (ISBN 9780937692219)

Still Life with Poem: Contributor Photos
The poetic challenge leveled at contributors to Still Life with Poem was to create their own still life scene and then use that arrangement of objects as the genesis of a brand-new poem. Here are photos of some of those still lifes! Their corresponding poems were published in the finished anthology from the Literary House Press, 2016: Still Life with Poem: Contemporary Natures Mortes in Verse.
