    Our History

Founded in 1992, the Washington College Academy of Lifelong Learning was created by a small group of Kent County residents who worked for more than a year studying other similar college-affiliated institutions.  WC-ALL was patterned after the Institute for Learning in Retirement (ILR) as established by Elderhostel (now known as Road Scholar) and is governed by its members, taught by its peers, and operates within the academic institutional guidelines provided by its sponsor, Washington College.

The format established during the first years has remained surprisingly intact: a governing council, twice-annual catalogs, a Showcase to launch each semester, classes emphasizing serious academic content, and a Learn-at-Lunch series to provide one-time special events.

    ALLship

WC-ALL membership is available on an annual or semester basis, with annual dues payable in August of each year (please refer to the WC-ALL website for more information on current dues). In the event of financial need, prospective members may request financial assistance in the form of an ALLship, a WC-ALL scholarship, by filling out a request form located on the WC-ALL website. Any information submitted in the request will be kept confidential.  The awarding of an ALLship is at the sole discretion of the WC-ALL Council.

Four one-semester ALLships will be made available per budget year.  Requests for an ALLship will be due one week following the Fall Showcase, for Fall scholarships, and one week following the Winter Showcase, for Winter scholarships, to allow for review and notification of successful applicants prior to the end of semester registration.  An ALLship recipient will be treated the same as Washington College Faculty, Staff and WC-ALL Instructors and will register for the semester of classes using that member designation.  ALLships will be tracked manually by the WC-ALL administrator and the number of ALLships awarded in a particular semester will be reported by the Council Chair in the Council Meeting following the awarding of the ALLships.  Council Chair will be delegated authority by the WC-ALL Council to award the four semester ALLships.  If there are more than four deserving requests in a budget year, exceptions can be granted through a majority vote of the WC-ALL Council.

Language that should be included with the instructions on filling out the on-line request form:  All information included in this form is kept confidential.  No private information, such as income, social security number, bank information, etc. should be shared in the request.  If you have questions or would like to speak to someone regarding this request, please call 410-778-7793 or send an email to [email protected].  The request form should include fields for name, physical address, email address and a 300-word general description of why an ALLship is being requested.  To further protect an applicant’s privacy, only the Council Chair and the WC-ALL administrator may know the names of the applicants.  In the case of an exception, only the description of why the applicant is requesting an ALLship will be shared with Council members.  Once ALLships have been awarded for a semester, all information provided by the applicants will be deleted by the administrator.
