After discovering a passion for journalism at Washington College, Olivia Montes '22 went on to complete a Master of Science in Journalism at the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism, one of the top programs in the field.

I chose Communication and Media Studies as one of my majors because of how much I really enjoyed Introduction to Communication and Media Studies. It was so fascinating to learn how audiences received and processed information across so many different platforms, and how this influences how we think, feel, act, and react to the world around us.

Many faculty members were incredibly supportive during my time at Washington College, and it was so encouraging because not only were they passionate about what they were teaching, but they were also passionate in helping me and my classmates to succeed and thrive both in and out of the classroom.

Outside the classroom, I served as a staff writer for the student-led, on-campus newspaper The Elm, and eventually rose to serving on the editorial board as the Lifestyle section and News co-editor. I also hosted a weekly podcast series called Washington College Weekly for the on-campus radio station Radio Free George, and eventually served as the General Manager of the station my senior year. Both of these opportunities really solidified my passion for writing—and every part of the writing process—and the chance to really explore my newfound passion for journalism.

After graduating from Washington College, I attended and recently graduated from the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism, earning my Master of Science degree in Journalism.

In Washington College, you will definitely find a place that gives you the tools, the space, and the support to succeed, and you will learn how to prepare yourself to handle all that life throws your way.
