Research

As a marine scientist, my research focuses on understanding how environmental drivers, such as nutrient pollution and climate change, affect the health of coral reefs. Most recently, I examined the impact of development on coastal ecosystem health in support of conservation, protection, or mitigation efforts in the tropical Western Pacific.

Professional Experience

I am committed to broadening the impact of my research and have engaged in a broad range of professional activities, including contributing to the United Nations World Ocean Assessment, participating in working groups examining the ecology of diseases at the National Center for Ecological Analysis and Synthesis, and serving as an advisor to the Coral Disease Working Group of the World Bank. I also completed two terms as a member of the Ocean Studies Board of the National Academies and a term as an Executive Member of the International Coral Reef Society. I am currently serving on the editorial board of the journal Coral Reefs.
