An event of many years standing, the department annually hosts Thomas May and Matthew Holtzman, two Tutors from St. John's College, the Great Books school in Annapolis, for a roundtable discussion of a classic or contemporary text. The event normally takes place in the fall term. Previous essays discussed include "Walking" by Henry David Thoreau, "Letter From Birmingham Jail" by Martin Luther King, and select pieces by figures such as Plato, Cicero, and Montaigne.
