Scholarships and Fellowships
These scholarships and fellowships require outstanding academic performance (usually a minimum GPA of 3.75), a passion for your field of study and significant leadership experience. Some also require that you would be a good representative of the United States in another country. For some of these awards, you do not apply directly to the sponsoring organization but must be nominated by the College. But for all of these awards it is essential that you work with Dean DiQuinzio and your professors to develop a strong application.

For undergraduate study

Stipends vary by host university but are usually between $3500 – $5000 for a summer, some awards include summer housing.
Supports a summer laboratory research opportunity in the natural sciences including engineering, biotechnology and some areas of mathematics, at leading universities in the U.S., including Cal Tech, MIT, Stanford, UCLA, Washington University in St Louis and Columbia University.
Amgen Scholars take part in important university research projects, gain hands-on lab experience and contribute to the advancement of science; interact with and receive guidance from faculty mentors, including some of the world’s leading academic scientists; and attend scientific seminars, workshops and other networking events.
Offerings vary by host institution, some provide housing and support for the graduate school application process, such as GRE preparation and mock interviews.
Eligible to apply: Sophomores, juniors and seniors who will return to study at their undergraduate institution the following fall who plan on pursuing a PhD or an MD/PhD in the areas supported by the scholarship.

Up to $20,000 for study abroad in areas critical to U.S. interests and underrepresented in study abroad, including study of a less commonly taught language.
Scholarships up to $20,000 to U.S. undergraduate students to study abroad in areas of the world that are critical to U.S. interests and underrepresented in study abroad, including Africa, Asia, Central & Eastern Europe, Eurasia, Latin America, and the Middle East, including study of a less commonly taught language.
Boren Scholars represent a variety of academic backgrounds, but all are interested in studying less commonly taught languages, including but not limited to Arabic, Chinese, Korean, Portuguese, Russian, and Swahili.

Up to $7500/year for junior and senior students pursuing research careers in mathematics, natural sciences, or engineering.
Scholarships for undergraduate tuition, fees, books, and room and board, up to $7500/year, to junior and senior students pursuing careers in mathematics, natural sciences, or engineering.
Criteria include the applicant’s field of study and career objectives and the extent to which s/he has the commitment and potential to make a significant contribution to his or her field, as indicated in the statement describing his/her intent to enter an appropriate career in mathematics, the natural sciences, or engineering and specifying how his/her educational plans will provide preparation for that career. Students selected as scholars are expected to pursue advanced degrees.

Up to $37,500 annually for senior year of college and first year of graduate study in programs relevant to the work of the US Department of State, such as international affairs, management, communications, history, political science, economics, and foreign languages.

The Pickering Fellowship seeks to recruit talented students in academic programs relevant to international affairs, political and economic analysis, administration, management, and science policy. The goal is to attract outstanding students from all ethnic, racial, and social backgrounds who have an interest in pursuing a Foreign Service career in the U.S. Department of State.

Scholarships up to $5,000 for undergraduate tuition, room and board, or other educational expenses, to students who have demonstrated commitment to careers related to the environment, including environmental policy, engineering, science, education, urban planning and renewal, business, health, justice, and economics or Native American and Alaska Native students who have demonstrated commitment to careers related to tribal public policy or who have demonstrated commitment to careers related to Native health care.
Scholars are selected on the basis of: Demonstrated commitment to environmental or natural resource issues; or to tribal public policy; or to Native American health care, demonstrated through substantial contributions to and participation in one or more of the following: campus activities, research, tribal involvement, community or public service; a course of study and proposed career likely to lead to position where the applicant can make significant contributions to the shaping of either environmental, or tribal public policy, or Native American health care issues, whether through scientific advances, public or political service, or community action; and leadership, character, desire to make a difference, general well-roundedness.

American Association of University Women Selected Professions Scholarship
For women in graduate school in architecture, computer and information sciences, engineering, and mathematics and statistics, and fellowships to women of color for graduate study in business administration, law and medicine.
Scholarships for women at various stages of graduate training in architecture, computer and information sciences, engineering, and mathematics and statistics, and fellowships to women of color for graduate study in business administration, law, and medicine; originally to open doors for women in the male-dominated fields of law and medicine, later expanded to include science and technology as the demand for a technologically skilled work force has grown without proportional representation by women, to address the underrepresentation of women of color in promising professions and encourage cultural diversity in these areas, fellowships for business administration, law, and medicine.
Criteria include academic excellence, commitment to improving the human condition, and the promise of continued impact.

For US college graduates for graduate study at any UK institution in any field of study.
Scholarships for US college graduates for graduate study at any UK institution in any field of study; covers university fees, cost of living expenses, annual book grant, thesis grant, research and daily travel grants and fares to and from the United States.
The goals of the Marshall Scholarship are to enable intellectually distinguished young Americans, their country’s future leaders, to study in the UK; to help Scholars gain an understanding and appreciation of contemporary Britain; to contribute to the advancement of knowledge in science, technology, the humanities and social sciences and the creative arts at Britain’s centers of academic excellence; to motivate Scholars to act as ambassadors from the US to the UK and vice versa throughout their lives thus strengthening British American understanding; to promote the personal and academic fulfillment of each Scholar.

A year’s support to do a research project, in any major or subject area, or to teach English outside of the US.
Awards a year’s support to do a research project, in any major or subject area, or to teach English outside of the US.
For a Study/Research grant, primary criteria are quality and feasibility of the research proposal, academic or professional record, personal qualifications, language preparation, the extent to which the candidate and the project will help to advance the Fulbright aim of promoting mutual understanding among nations through engagement in the host community, ability of the supervising agencies abroad to arrange/confirm supervision and facilitate research clearance, if necessary.
For an English Teaching Assistantship, primary criteria are the specific qualifications, training, and/or experiences related to the overseas assignment, how the applicant expects to benefit from the assignment, what use s/he will make of the experience your return to the United States and the quality of the proposed independent academic, vocational, or community service project that the applicant will do in his/her time outside the classroom.

Fellowships of up to $30,000 for students of superior academic ability—selected on the basis of demonstrated achievement, financial need, and exceptional promise—who plan to complete a Ph.D. to undertake study at the doctoral and Master of Fine Arts level in selected fields of arts, humanities, and social sciences.
Criteria include a clear vision and purpose demonstrated in the personal statement, evidence of depth and breadth in the field of study as demonstrated in the transcript, and honors/awards or other activities related to the field, including those that show leadership. GRE scores are also considered.

Up to $24,000 to students planning to teach American history, American government, or social studies at the secondary school level (grades 7-12) for graduate work in history, political science, or teaching in history or social studies.
Fellowships of up to $24,000 to individuals desiring to become outstanding teachers of the American Constitution at the secondary school level (grades 7 – 12), for an M.A. in American history, political science, or government; an MAT concentrating on either American Constitutional history (in a history department) or American government, political institutions, and political theory (in a political science department); or an MEd with a concentration in American history or American government, political institutions, and political theory.
Criteria include demonstrated commitment to a career teaching American history, American government, or social studies at the secondary school level; demonstrated intent to pursue and complete a program of graduate study that emphasizes the Constitution and offers instruction in that subject; demonstrated devotion to civic responsibility; demonstrated capacity for study and performance as classroom teachers, and the proposed courses of graduate study.

For students committed to teaching science and mathematics in US high schools for five years of professional development support.
For students and recent graduates committed to teaching science and mathematics in US high schools. Criteria are the potential to develop the content knowledge needed for teaching, the potential to develop exemplary teaching practices, and the potential to develop the qualities of a teacher leader. Applicants must demonstrate the ability to develop in each of these areas in order to be selected.
The fellowship provides five years of professional development support including ongoing feedback and support from program officers with extensive experience in science and mathematics education, summer and academic year professional development, collaborative lesson study and yearly portfolios that document each Fellow’s progress as a teacher.
Fellows receive tuition support and monthly stipends while working on a teaching credential and a stipend during the summer months, funds for professional development and for teaching materials to support student understanding in scientific inquiry or mathematical problem solving. Fellows can apply for leadership grants and are given financial support to apply for National Board certification and for membership in relevant professional organizations.

Supports one year of postgraduate study in any discipline offered by institutions of higher learning in Ireland and Northern Ireland.

Fellowships of $20,000 annual stipend for up to six years including one or two paid summer internships with a government agency for graduate study in astronomy, chemistry, computer science, geology, materials science, mathematical sciences, physics, and their subdisciplines, and related engineering fields: chemical, computer, electrical, environmental, mechanical.
The National Physical Science Consortium is a partnership between government agencies and laboratories, industry, and higher education; the organizations that provide the internships select the fellows according to the following criteria: Whether the applicant’s field of study matches the employer’s needs, the applicant’s undergraduate and graduate course work and grades and research experience at a university or in industry. The GRE General tests are required; the Subject test is suggested.

$30,000 annual stipend, $10,500 allowance for up to three years and international research and professional development opportunities, for students pursuing research-based master’s and doctoral degrees in NSF-supported science, technology, engineering, and mathematics disciplines.
Criteria include intellectual merit (the strength of the academic record, the proposed plan of research and whether it is potentially transformative, the description of previous research experience, references, and the appropriateness of the choice of institution relative to the proposed plan for graduate education and research) and broader impacts (contributions that infuse learning with the excitement of discovery, and assure that the findings and methods of research are communicated in a broad context and to a large audience).

Up to $37,500 annually for a two-year, full-time master’s degree program in public policy, international affairs, public administration, business, economics, political science, sociology, or foreign languages. Participation in the program is explicitly conditioned upon obtaining a Department of State worldwide medical clearance, a top secret security clearance and a favorable suitability review. Participants are contractually obliged to work as a Foreign Service Officer with the Department of State for a minimum of five years following completion of the Fellowship program
Fellowships up to $37,500 annually for actual expenses during the first and second years of a two-year full-time master’s degree program in areas such as public policy, international affairs, public administration, or academic fields such as business, economics, political science, sociology or foreign languages), in US graduate institutions only. Fellowships cover tuition costs (first priority), room and board, books, mandatory fees and one round-trip ticket between Fellow’s residence and his/her academic institutions.

A fellowship program for recent grads who want to learn how to build a business while making an impact. VFA Fellows get training and join a startup in an emerging US city, where they learn hands-on what it takes to build a company and become a successful entrepreneur.
Five week Training Camp, followed by placement for two years in an entry-level position in an early-stage company in a high-growth industry such as tech/internet, healthcare, marketing, venture capital, education, consumer apps, energy; companies are typically fewer than 10 years old with fewer than 50 full-time employees. Salary is paid by the placement company, training camp and other costs of the program are paid by VFA.
Criteria include intelligence, character especially integrity, grit, potential to found a company and ability to contribute to a startup company.

Up to $30,000 for graduate study in public service fields, for students who plan to pursue careers in government or elsewhere in public service.
Scholarships up to $30,000 for students who intend to earn a graduate degree in that will enable them to pursue a career in government or other public service; includes participation in leadership development activities and special opportunities for internships and employment with the federal government.
Criteria include the extent and quality of nominee’s community service and government involvement, leadership record, academic performance, especially writing and analytical skill, communication skills, the suitability of the nominee’s proposed program of study for a career in public service and the likelihood of the nominee ‘making a difference’ in public service.
