Before spending a semester enjoying the scenery and culture of Seoul, Kelly put in the hard work of fulfilling the requirements for studying abroad, including multiple written pieces and letters of recommendation.
It wasn’t all academic preparation, though—she explored every area of life abroad to prepare for her trip across the globe. “I researched the university, watched YouTube videos, and even asked a couple of students at WC [who were studying abroad] from Yonsei University. Their opinions and experiences were the most useful.”
Kelly’s semester was full of new opportunities to further both her education and her personal life. Taking six classes in a study-abroad experience was invaluable for her major in international studies. Courses such as Korean and East Asian International Relations and Basic Korean I bolstered her love of learning and presented opportunities to engage with her new environment.
“I am passionate about learning new cultures and languages, as well as understanding people on a better level. I also love taking advantage of opportunities and living life to the fullest.”
Kelly is grateful for the platform and opportunities WC has provided for her to study abroad—and for the experience itself for providing new insights into her future.
“It has enlightened me to a whole new perspective on life and increased my sense of independence. I have also learned to love and accept myself as I am and for who I am.”
Her advice to any student looking to study abroad? “Do lots and lots of research about your host university, and plan way ahead of time.” Students can work with the Global Education Office to coordinate their study-abroad experience through one of WC’s numerous partner institutions.
After graduation, Kelly plans on a gap year dedicated to work and internships before she heads to graduate school.
