Student Government Association

The Student Government Association (SGA) is your voice on campus. We represent and welcome all students and provide a variety of services to the community. Getting involved is easy—just drop us a line at [email protected], stop by our office in Hodson Hall, or follow us on Instagram: @wac_sga !

What We Do

We are a student-led office of the College that coordinates and finances over 80 student clubs and organizations. The SGA also organizes and oversees campus-wide service projects, environmental initiatives, advocacy events, and a variety of student services.

The Executive Board is comprised of all SGA student employees, who work together across their specialties to address student concerns, host events, and pursue initiatives that will improve every sector of campus life. The Executive Board carries out the majority of day-to-day SGA functionality and works toward long-term campus improvement. The Executive Board is comprised of the Secretary of Diversity & Free Expression, Secretary of Student Life, Secretary of Environment, Secretary of Service & Community Relations, Secretary of Academics, and Director of Communications & Marketing.

Casey Time

Each year, Washington College students devote a day to campus beautification in appreciation of Eugene B. Casey and Betty Casey ’47 for their generous support of our institution.

iServe

Each year, Washington College students volunteer with a local organization in order to beautify Chestertown.

First-Year Orientation Service Project

The Student Government Association and Student Affairs hosted the first ever Orientation Explore Service Day Project with the first-year students completing mini service projects within the town of Chestertown.

From investments in a wakeboard and waterski boat to investing in new furniture for the library terrace, retrofitting water fountains to fit refillable bottles, and renovating campus buildings, the SGA makes strategic investments into student life on campus.

EC4EC- Plan B Initiative

The Student Government Association's Secretary of Service & Community Relations partners with the Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA) Club and Health Services in an ongoing initiative supported by the Emergency Contraception for Every Campus (EC4EC) program that helps students across college campuses navigate the process of providing emergency contraception to students and the community for free.

This initiative was approved for peer-to-peer distribution, meaning appointed student leaders on campus are able to stock and/or distribute Plan B. Plan B can currently be found in George's General Store, the SGA Office, and various bathrooms on campus.

SGA encourages any students who need Plan B to contact and schedule an appointment with Health Services. More effective forms of emergency contraception, like Ella, can be optained through a prescription written by Health Services.

For more information, reach out to Joseph%20Atkins and Lisa%20Marx or call Health Services at 410-778-7261.

Bird Sticker Project 2025

Have you noticed something different about the windows on the balcony of the dining hall and Sophie's Cafe? Those small dots are actually an incredible tool working to save the lives of local birds! According to the American Bird Conservancy, over one billion birds die globally from window collisions each year, and buildings with large stretches of windows, like Hodson, can be incredibly vulnerable areas. In an attempt to combat this, SGA Secretary of the Environment Justin Looper '26 partnered with Bird Club and the Natural Lands Project to bring bird collision avoidant stickers to our main campus. These stickers are also installed at Semans-Griswold Hall by the waterfront. The stickers are from a Toronto-based business called Feather Friendly that specializes in making these dots to reduce avian collision risks on windows. We were able to purchase over 700 square feet of these stickers, and installed them on campus!

Safe Ride is a student-run program that provides free, safe transportation to Washington College students on campus and throughout Chestertown.

Call Safe Ride at 410-810-RIDE (7433)

Side Ride Hours:
Fridays 9 p.m. to midnight
Saturdays 8 p.m. to 1 a.m.
Sundays 9 p.m. to midnight

Purpose
The Washington College Safe Ride program is a free and relatively confidential service for students run by fellow peers. Safe Ride provides students with a safe way to get back to campus without having to walk or drive themselves. Safe Ride protects Washington College students from potential physical or verbal harassment from non-students. The program has also shown a reduction in the complaints from the town, since students are not trespassing on private property as they travel through Chestertown. This program has facilitated a more cordial relationship between the college and the town as it continues to grow.

Bike Share gives students free access to bicycles during the academic year. Contact Secretary of the Environment at sga_environmentFREEwashcoll to reserve a bike or ask more about the program.

Washington College is the host and facilitator for the Mid-Athlantic Student Government Leadership Summit (MASGLS), a concept originated at Washington. The event brings together regional student government associations on shared issues, projects, and ideas to better our campus communities. We are inspired by the work that happens at our peer institutions and look to incorporate these practices here at Washington.

The use of the conference room in the SGA office is offered to students, clubs, organizations, and faculty. Contact the Director of Communications at sga_dcommFREEwashcoll to reserve the space.

If there is anything you would like to see changed, improved, or addressed on campus, please email the SGA at sgaFREEwashcoll at any time.
