  • 9:30am: Matt Palmer: “Effortless Technique: An Introduction to A-M-I Scales”
    Matt Palmer’s clinic is designed to introduce his technique of performing “A-M-I” scales, a groundbreaking right-hand technique of playing fast scales on the guitar. In a group setting, attendees will have the opportunity to learn about Matt’s ideas about A-M-I scale technique, including but not limited to basic fundamentals of performing A-M-I scales, left and right-hand principles, ascending and descending scales, changing direction within a scale, shifting using A-M-I, special problems, and practical application. Attendees will be provided with handouts and will be able to watch Matt demonstrate the techniques firsthand. The goal of the technique is to provide guitarists with an alternate method of performing scales rapidly, fluidly, and efficiently.
  • Paul Reed Smith 10:45am: Paul Reed Smith: “Understanding Guitars Through Personal Experience”
    Musical instruments are subtractive devices based in art, a long history of guitar making and applied physics.  While it is impossible to discuss all the finer details of guitar making in a short period of time, it is possible to give the attendees a good way to analyze their experiences when playing an instrument.
  • 3:00pm: LAGQ Master Class
    Open to the public to watch, advanced students will perform prepared pieces and be given pedagogical advice on musicality and technique by members of LAGQ.

  • 10:00am: Ian Wardenski: “An Introduction to Jazz Guitar for the Classical Guitarist”
    Introduces the classical guitarist to the fundamental and rudimental concepts needed to play jazz guitar. Topics to be discussed include: “tune” selection, developing a chord vocabulary, improvisation techniques, as well as how to play tunes in different settings (ensemble or solo).
  • 11:00am: Danielle Cumming: “Yoga for the Practice Room”
    Yoga for the Practice Room is a class of gentle, modified yoga poses and stretches that relieve tension, build strength and flexibility, and help prevent over-practice injuries. The exercises are easy enough to do in everyday clothes, when taking a break from practicing, typing, or just too much sitting. No previous yoga experience, yoga mats or yoga fashion needed.
  • 3:00pm: Rafael Scarfullery: “Using 20th Century Composition Styles and Techniques on the Guitar”
    In this practical workshop we’ll explore, play and improvise guitar music using some of the main 20th century composition styles and techniques. Whether we use a standard or unique musical language, by exploring what other composers have done, we’ll be able to gain more insight for fueling our creativity.
  • 4:00pm: Zebulon Turrentine: “Bad Things Happen to Good Guitars”
    Luthier Zebulon Turrentine facilitates a crash course of tips, tricks and stories that help preserve the health of your handmade guitar. In addition to experiments with sharp objects, extreme heat, and a chance to test your French Polishing repair skills, participants will sample the wood that makes Zeb’s guitars and walk away with a free guitar protection gadget.
