Radiant Echo
Art Installation in the McLain Atrium of the Toll Science Center. - Created by Flux Studio, Baltimore
Radiant Echo is an illuminated, choreographed sculpture installation that honors the work and
legacy of two Washington College alumni and chemistry professors—Joseph H. McLain
’37 and John A. Conkling ’65—whose contributions to the College, teaching, technology,
and the field of fireworks were innovative and far-reaching across more than seventy
years.

Installed in the three-story McLain Atrium, Radiant Echo spans 27 feet from top to bottom and 31 feet across. Comprised of 78 suspended strands, the work features 286 reflective orbs and 3,640 programmable LED lights that move through a series of dynamic, evolving sequences. Faculty use the sculpture to illustrate principles from physics, chemistry, psychology, computer programming, and art.
