Having received his Bachelor's degree in Chemistry from Eastern Oregon University, Jeremy knew that he wanted to become a professor at another small, liberal arts college. In graduate school at The University of Oregon, he was trained in physical organic chemistry. His work in graduate school, which is related to his current work at Washington College, focuses on using organic synthesis to prepare new fluorescent molecules and use spectroscopic methods to characterize and study them.

Education:

  • Ph.D., Physical Organic Chemistry, University of Oregon, 2021
  • B.A., Chemistry, University of California, Eastern Oregon University, 2016

Academic Expertise:

  • Organic Synthesis
  • Spectroscopy

The Bard lab focuses on the synthesis and characterization of a variety of novel organic small molecules. Through a combination of organic synthesis, analytical measurement, and physical organic concepts, we work to develop structure-property relationships for families of related molecules. Primarily, we are focusing on developing new and interesting types of Fluorescence Resonance Energy Transfer (FRET) dyes that seek to achieve high separations between the colors of light emitted and the colors of light absorbed.
