Health and Wellness

We take the physical health of our students seriously. In addition to our campus recreation and fitness offerings and opportunities to earn credit with wellness and personal development courses, Health Services serves as another key component of staying healthy while on campus.

Health Services

Health Services provides care for full-time students during the regular academic year by appointment. Services include treatment for most health issues college students may have, including:

  • cold, flu, and other minor illness
  • management of some chronic conditions
  • minor injuries
  • allergy shots
  • women's contraceptives (including no-cost Plan B)

Our students are seen by a family nurse practitioner, physician assistant, or registered nurse; all services are confidential; and information cannot be released to administration, faculty, or parents without permission. The Health Center is located between Caroline and Queen Anne's Houses. It is open 8:30 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. To make an appointment, call 410-778-7261.

Students requiring more extensive evaluation, testing, or admission are referred to the local hospital, University of Maryland Shore Regional Health, located just off campus. View more local healthcare resources here

Health Services Operations

All students are required to complete a health questionnaire, have a physical exam, and meet immunization requirements before their enrollment at Washington College. Physical exams must be completed within the 6 month period prior to the due date. Required immunizations are listed on the Health Form.

Washington College requires standard vaccines for all students, except by bona fide religious or medical exemptions, to help mitigate risk to the community and to support public health efforts in disease containment.

There is no charge for your visit to the Health Center. Certain procedures and treatments may be charged. All charges from the Health Center will be sent to your student account—there is no upfront copay or fees—and viewable on the next month's bill.

Fees will be charged for items like:

  • Prescription and over-the-counter medications. Prescriptions can also be written and taken to a local pharmacy.
  • In-house lab tests such as strep and urinalysis and urine pregnancy tests.
  • Procedure charges (which may include): suturing, nebulizer treatments, removal of impacted ear wax, cryo-freezing of warts or lesions, nail trephination, fluorescein eye exam, or removal of foreign bodies
  • Medical supplies (like): ace wraps, splints, slings, reusable hot/cold pack

Students are financially responsible for the cost of any services performed outside the Health Center or prescriptions that need to be filled at a local pharmacy.

Feel free to inquire about the cost of medications, tests, or vaccines before they are given. Charges cannot be refunded after services are rendered.

Health Services does not bill insurance companies but will provide a receipt if needed to submit to an insurance carrier for reimbursement.

All students are required to complete a health questionnaire, have a physical exam, and meet immunization requirements before their enrollment at Washington College. Campus Initiatives

Allergy and celiac cases are handled in the dining hall on an individual basis and anyone needing those accommodations are encouraged to speak with dining hall staff to create individualized plans based on specific needs. Dining Managers and our Executive Chef will sit with you to discuss your needs, review menu items and ingredients, consider possible specialty items, answer questions about cross contamination questions, and develop a plan to fit your dining needs.

Allergy ingredients are not labeled on all food items. Products are prepared in common kitchens with shared equipment, so Dining Services cannot guarantee items are not exposed to other products in our kitchens. While we try to label all items and use appropriate logos, they are a general guide and we cannot guarantee each ingredient within a particular dish or that signs did not get moved during a meal service. We cannot guarantee items that are self-serve do not come into contact with other products.

If you have questions about our menu or individual items, speak with a manager or chef. All dining employees can direct you to those individuals who can answer your questions.

For more information, visit Dining Services

Health Services offers Plan B. Students may schedule an appointment with Health Services if desired. There is no charge for this service, and as with all services, it is confidential.

The morning after pill (Plan B) may be given up to 72 hours (3 days) after unprotected sex.

Each year, the College hosts a flu shot clinic, providing easy access to immunizations. The influenza immunization is strongly recommended for all Washington College students because it is an important step in reducing flu-related illnesses and the overall impact of respiratory illnesses.
