The WC-ALL Socrates Café

Finding opportunities for unhurried, face-to-face discussion of life’s big questions can be challenging in today’s hyper-noisy, technology-driven world.

What does it mean to live a “good” or ethical life these days?  In a society with instant and ubiquitous connections, what is friendship?  What is wisdom, and where do we go to find it?

Drawing on the Socratic tradition of lively, open-ended inquiry, WC-ALL’s Socrates Café is a forum for exploring questions that don’t have easy right-or-wrong answers. There are no assigned readings, and each session’s topic is selected by those in attendance. The only prerequisite for participation is a willingness to listen respectfully as others share their thoughts and experiences.

The WC-ALL Socrates Café is modeled on the work of journalist Christopher Phillips, who has facilitated hundreds of public philosophical discussions since the mid-1990s.  His several books drawing on those conversations include Socrates Café: A Fresh Taste of Philosophy and Six Questions of Socrates.
