Incarcerated Women: Serving Life Sentences in Ohio

Emily Steinmetz is an anthropologist who specializes in cultural anthropology, anthropology of the U.S., and inequalities in U.S. life. She has two areas of focus in her research: the carceral state and women's imprisonment, and U.S. health inequalities.
In 2017-2018, she collaborated with a team of undergraduate students and incarcerated women to produce a museum exhibit about life sentences and the parole system in Ohio, and her current research about women serving life sentences is a continuation of that project. She has taught college courses in women's prisons for nine years, and she leads classes that bring incarcerated and campus-based students together for dialogue.
