New Tool for Canvas: Arc Media


What is Arc?

Arc is a media tool that allows instructors and students to actively collaborate through video and audio. 

Arc’s interface lets students and instructors engage with media content by commenting directly on the media timeline. Students can learn from each other’s insights as well as from the instructor’s direction and feedback.

Changes to Turnitin - Spring 2017

 

Beginning January 2017 Turnitin will work differently in Canvas.

 

Up until now Canvas has used what is referred to as the Turnitin API tool, but this tool is being retired at the end of 2016. The Turnitin API tool will be replaced by the Turnitin LTI tool.   This means that the way you set up Turnitin assignments and the way students hand in Turnitin assignments in Canvas will change.

Creating an assignment using the Turnitin LTI tool

 

 

To create an assignment using the Turnitin LTI tool, begin by creating an assignment as you typically would in Canvas. Then complete the following steps:

  1. Select “External Tool” from the menu in the Submission Type box.
  2. Click “Find” under External Tool Options. This will bring up a list of external tools to select from. Select “Turnitin LTI” from the list.
  3. Create a due date for the assignment. Creating Turnitin assignments without a due date is not recommended.
  4. Set the availability dates for the assignment. Creating Turnitin asignments without availability dates is not recommended.

Accessing and importing assignments created with the legacy Turnitin API:

 

If you import Turnitin-enabled Canvas assignments from previous semesters, you’ll need to edit each assignment to use the new LTI integration by changing the assignment type to an external tool assignment, using the same process as creating a new assignment.

Turnitin Originality Reports for assignments created with the legacy Turnitin API will no longer be available in Canvas after January 2017.  You will be able to access legacy Turnitin API Originality Reports through Turnitin.  For assistance doing so, please contact Nancy Cross ncross2@washcoll.edu.

 

Additional Information:

The Turnitin LTI currently includes a few limitations when creating assignments:

  • You cannot use Turnitin with group assignments. 
  • Turnitin assignments cannot include more than one submission date; differentiated due dates are not supported.
  • Turnitin submissions require a minimum of 25 words, and maximum of 400 pages, and a file size maximum of 40 MB.
  • You cannot restrict student submission types. File types currently supported include:
    Text (.txt), Microsoft Word (.doc/.docx), Microsoft PowerPoint (.ppt/.pptx), Postcript (.ps), Portable Document Format (.pdf), Rich Text Format (.rtf), HyperText Markup Language (.html), WordPerfect (.wp), Hangul (.hwp), or Open Office (.odt/.ods/.odp).
  • Students cannot submit multiple file uploads.
  • Resubmissions are not allowed by default. To allow resubmissions for a Turnitin assignment, click here.
  • If you want to use a rubric in Canvas, create a blank Canvas assignment (e.g., a “No Submission” assignment), add a rubric, and then edit the assignment and add the Turnitin LTI after the rubric is created.
