Class of 2013
Major/Minor: Sociology/Creative Writing
My critical thinking and writing skills, which I honed at WAC, are used every day in my social work classes and internship.
How has your liberal arts education influenced you? How do you apply your LAE in your current career?
My critical thinking and writing skills, which I honed at WAC, are used every day in my social work classes and internship. I was drawn to social work because of its focus on direct service, as well as skills such as critically examining problems from different perspectives.
What is your favorite Washington College memory?
One of my favorite memories was performing in the spring dance concerts, especially my senior year. It was always great to see the hard work that went into the concerts and to share my love of dance with the campus community.
Did your Senior Capstone Experience (or thesis project) have a major influence on your future career or your personal growth? If so, please explain what your SCE entailed and how it influenced who or where you are today.
My thesis focused on using writing therapy with victims and perpetrators of sexual violence, including research about narrative therapies and need for services for both groups of people. I have realized the importance of healing for victims and the need for reintegration services for perpetrators of violent crimes. Seeing this need has solidified my commitment to help both groups of people and the desire to combine my social work background and my love of the creative arts in order to do so.
It is your graduation day. What advice would you now give your younger self?
Don’t worry too much about finding the perfect job after graduation. Find something in your field, even if it might not be where you end up staying, and make as many connections as you can.
