Brittany Palasik

Class of 2012
Major/Minor: Biology, Chemistry, Pre-Pharmacy

Before she had even graduated from Washington College, Brittany Palasik ’12 was already enrolled at the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy.

The biology major is taking advantage of Washington College’s dual-degree program in pharmacy, which allows her to enjoy all the benefits of a liberal arts experience while fulfilling the prerequisites for admission into UM’s School of Pharmacy. At the conclusion of four years of study at University of Maryland campus in Baltimore City, Brittany will have earned a bachelor’s degree from Washington College and a doctor of pharmacy degree (Pharm.D.) from University of Maryland—within seven years.

“It’s truly amazing that I’m able to save a year of time and tuition expenses in completing an advanced degree,” she says. “Everyone I’ve met in Maryland’s pharmacy school already has an undergraduate degree and has taken one or two years off. WC’s pre-pharmacy program is actually a planned curriculum that avoids duplication of effort. There were certain classes—like biochemistry and immunology—that I didn’t have to take for my major at WC, because I’m taking them in pharmacy school.”

The daughter of two pharmacists, Brittany discovered a passion for the sciences at a young age. “I especially enjoy the dynamic of the medical field, and I realized that a career in pharmacy could enable me to do something I love while also making a difference in my community,” she says.

Brittany credits Martin Connaughton, associate professor of biology and her pre-pharmacy advisor, for keeping her on track. “It’s really hard to do the 3:4 program without proper planning,” Brittany says. “Dr. Connaughton helped me so much. He planned my entire schedule perfectly. After two five-course loads in the spring of my freshman and sophomore years, I only had to take three classes in my final semester at WC.”

Now commuting to school in Baltimore City from her home in Severna Park, Brittany is happy with the choice she made. “I love chemistry, I love biology, I love working with people, and pharmacy is a great field for women,” she says.
