On Being A Peer Consultant At The Writing Center

Throughout high school, I spent extensive amounts of time helping international students with their English, both in speaking and in writing. I really enjoyed that process and had been toying with the idea of teaching English as a second language. I came to Washington College and I stumbled upon the opportunity to intern at the Writing Center and learn how to be a peer writing consultant. I thought that the internship would be a great opportunity for me to gain experience with tutoring and that it would provide me with knowledge that I could apply to my own writing. I have to say that my decision to apply for the internship was one of the best decisions that I have made here at Washington College. Not only did I learn how to tutor other students with different types of learning styles and needs, but I also learned how to examine my own writing more critically.

Study Abroad: Lingnan University, Hong Kong

During the fall of 2010, I went abroad to study in the cosmopolitan city of Hong Kong. While there, I studied the rich cultural heritage of the overpopulated city. The courses I took at Lingnan University provided me with insight about the city that one would not gain when just walking around in the downtown areas. Not only did I explore the bustling markets, parks, and museums of the Tsim Sha Tsui and Central districts, but I also had the opportunity to travel to small monasteries tucked in the mountains and hike the trails of the Eastern New Territories to see small villages situated next to the sparkling beaches. I took advantage of Hong Kong’s proximity to other Asian countries and had the chance to travel to Tokyo, Taiwan, Guangzhou, and other parts of southern China.
