Basketball Star Gets Her Start in Business
Elise Conway ‘08 spent a summer interning with Under Armour, where she gained valuable experience and insight to prepare her for a career in sports marketing.
Under Armour is one of the hottest brands of athletic gear, and Elise Conway ‘08 gained an insider’s perspective - and a job - after interning with the Baltimore firm last summer.
One of 30 interns selected from a pool of 1,500 applicants, Elise worked in the sports marketing department, which makes endorsement deals with professional athletes and colleges, including the University of Maryland, Texas Tech, Auburn and the University of South Carolina.
Elise’s duties included researching potential deals and helping to create an outfitting manual for all the sports, as well as a tier system to rank different schools.
“It was rewarding because I got to use skills learned from each of my business classes,” she said. Courses in accounting, financial analysis, marketing, organizational behavior and Management Information Systems (MIS) were important to her success, as was her membership in Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) and the balance she gained from juggling classes and her role as basketball team captain.
Elise credits her professors with encouraging her endeavors.
“The entire business department has been supportive of me, not only in the classroom, but on the court. Every single one of my business professors has been to one of my games. They take a strong interest in my development in college and after graduation.”
Elise took a full-time position with Under Armour after graduation, but she hopes to someday own a sports marketing firm.
“After taking the business classes here I recognized the numerous opportunities to combine my love of sports and business. My educational experiences at Washington College really opened my eyes to a lot of different opportunities,” she said.
