Tamanya Garza

Class of 2002
Major/Minor: Drama / English

Tamanya Garza graduated in 2002 with a major in Drama and a minor in English.

Right out of school she moved to Philadelphia, WAC North, as you may know it now, to work as a Directing Fellow at the Philadelphia Theatre Company. During her yearlong fellowship she assisted some of the most inspiring directors in the business and learned how thrilling the Philadelphia theater community can be. She set her eye on the position in her senior year at WAC when she interned at PTC for then Dramaturg and WAC alumna/professor Michele Volansky.

In 2003 Tamanya moved to The Wilma Theater as the Artistic Fellow and began her career as a professional freelance director and producer. She has directed and/or produced for Madhouse Theater Company, The Omega Sessions, SKITSoid, The Brick Playhouse, The University of Philadelphia’s Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts and Secret Room Theatre. She also produced the 2006 Philly Fringe Show ALIVE OR WITH ANY DIGNITY, an investigation of the ravaging relationship between women and war. Because her parents are both military veterans this was one of Tamanya’s proudest moments, but she could not have put up the sold-out show without her co-producer Allison Heishman, WAC ’03.

In 2005 Tamanya went back to college – sort of – accepting a position in the Department of Student Life at the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia. There she worked in every capacity from Student Housing to planning Orientation programs. One of those programs was Making the Right Choices, a peer generated theater performance used to educate incoming students about the challenges college students face. Tamanya took this program on the road and has since become a Theater Consultant for colleges across the nation. In 2006 she presented at the National Orientation Directors Conference where she was recognized as the actress who plays Callie on Grey’s Anatomy, even though her name is not Sara Ramirez and she has never been on TV. She has also partnered with world renowned presenter Troy Stende of Stende Inspirations on multiple occasions, but he hasn’t taught her how to do that famous back flip just yet.

In 2008 Tamanya accepted a Marketing position at Brokers Worldwide to learn more about those tricky interwebs, and still works there today. To stay in shape for said interweb wrangling, she trains for marathons with her much faster fiancé Brent. They plan to run the 2012 Philadelphia Marathon and the zombie infested Run For Your Lives 5K. As closet nerds/HUGE Walking Dead fans, they are slightly more excited about the latter.

Because Tamanya clearly gets bored easily, she also volunteers for Women’s Way, an organization dedicated to fundraising for women’s equality, safety, self sufficiency, and reproductive freedom. She serves on the Ernesta Drinker Ballard Book Prize and Young Women’s Initiative committees and would love some company if you’d ever like to join her! Tamanya also recently served on the committee to raise funds for the new Gibson Center for the Arts here at WAC. She feels lucky to have been part of the process from conception to realization of the gorgeous arts space it has become, and is crazy proud of the committee and all the people who made it more than just a dream.

Last but not least, Tamanya is totes excited to be serving as the Class of 2002 10th Reunion Chair. Though she can’t imagine where ten years went so quickly she is stoked to bring the crew back together and is ready to help plan one of the best Reunions ever. For-ever ever.
