Bill Purcell

Since Graduation:

After Washington College, I did a stent in the Service and later received a Graduate degree from University of Wisconsin School of Banking.

My working career started out in Banking and later as a Corporate Financial Vice President when I retired in 1997. At that time we bought a 44’ Island Gypsy Trawler, moved aboard for four plus years and started out on what turned out to be roughly 10,000 miles of cruising. As part of that experience we did “The Great Loop” and ended it in Southwest Florida in 2004 when we moved into our house in Punta Gorda, Fl. The Great Loop is a circumnavigation of the eastern third of the Unite States and parts of Canada. This took us north up the Hudson River, through Lake Champlain to the Saint Lawrence River, out to Quebec City, to Montreal, Ottawa, Kingston, through the Trent Severn Waterway System, Georgian Bay, and North Channel to Sault Ste. Marie, down Lake Michigan to the Illinois River, the Mississippi, Ohio, Cumberland, Tennessee and Tennessee Tombigbee Rivers down to Mobile and the Florida Panhandle, across the Gulf of Mexico to Tarpon Springs and down to Punta Gorda.

I’ve been an avid sailor all my life prior to purchasing a power boat and going to the “Dark Side” as my wife would say. I’ve raced extensively in the Northeast and crewed mostly as watch captain on five Bermuda Races. Holley (my wife) and I have also sailed leisurely on deliveries from Miami to Conn. and from Conn. to Bermuda. We have also cruised in the Pacific Northwest, Virgin Islands and the Southwestern coat of Ireland. We are now enjoying lovely Southwest Florida, living on a canal with a different, smaller boat tied behind our house.

The long distance boating is a thing of the past. I’m now thinking about doing something different, like revisiting Washington College, which actually I have done many times in the past. Last spring Holley and I were having lunch at the restaurant down on the Chester River (Wharf?) when my old friend, classmate and fraternity brother, Bucky Larrimore, came up to me and said “Aren’t you that old reprobate Bill Purcell?” That made my day and the trip worthwhile!
