Plant Family: Zingiberaceae (Ginger Family)

Turmeric is a shrub native to southern Asia. it is not frost tender and can handle partial shade and nutritionally poor soil. Zones 5-9. Can be propagated through rhizomes as well as seeds. Its native habitat is open hillside. The berries are also edible.

The Spice: Primarily used in Indian food, famous for giving any food an interesting yellow tint. One can find it in curry. For the best flavor the root should be freshly ground.

The Permaculture: Would be a great addition to the understory, nice for pollinators and highly medicinal.
