The Washington College Enactus team recently traveled to St. Louis, Missouri to compete in the organization’s United States National Exposition.  One of 533 active teams in the United States, the Washington College team placed in the top 48 among 181 teams competing at the Expo, which evaluates the efficacy of entrepreneurial service projects.

Enactus is an organization designed to use the force of “entrepreneurial action to enable human progress.” The Washington College chapter’s web page elaborates on the mission as “harnessing the power of students in partnership with communities and businesses to transform lives and shape a better, more sustainable world.”

Founded in the U.S.  in 1975, Enactus has enabled thousands of students, academics, and entrepreneurs to collaborate on outreach projects in their own communities and around the world. Each year at the National Exposition, teams present their projects to a board of judges drawn from senior business executives of Enactus Partner Companies. The judges rate each project’s success and impact.

Washington College has experienced notable successes at the National Exposition in recent years, rising as high as the top 20. This year, the team presented four projects: Soap with Hope, Shore Marketing, Sprout to Action, and Garden Boxes.

Soap with Hope produces handmade soaps and funnels profits into sanitation projects in Haiti.  Shore Marketing helps local businesses better advertise themselves in and beyond Kent County. The Sprout to Action initiative promotes physical health and fitness through exercise and nutrition, working with nearby Garnett Elementary School to host healthy-lifestyle events. And Garden Boxes help lower-income families fight hunger and malnutrition by building garden boxes in which families can plant and grow their own organic fruits and vegetables.

The chapter brought home two trophies—one for advancing from the first round of competition, and the other for placing third in the quarter-final round. “It is truly inspiring to see what these students are able to accomplish,” says Lansing Williams, a business management professor who serves as Enactus advisor. “They are making the world a better place in an economically, socially and environmentally friendly way.”

In addition to the team’s success, the Exposition gave students valuable opportunities to connect with business professionals about job opportunities and internships. Chapter CEO Sarah Coyle even landed a job offer at major retail company that includes a leadership development program.
