Renowned Shakespeare expert Barbara Mowat returns to Washington College to explore one of the Bard’s finest tragedies, which the Drama Department will stage in early April.

CHESTERTOWN, MD—Renowned Shakespeare expert Barbara A. Mowat, a former Dean of Washington College, will share her expertise on King Lear when she lectures on Wednesday, March 6, at the Rose O’Neill Literary House.  The talk, “ ‘And That’s True Too’: Puzzling the Texts of King Lear,” will take place at 4:30 p.m. and is free and open to the public.  The Literary House is located at 407 Washington Avenue.

Mowat is Director of Research Emerita at the Folger Shakespeare Library, Consulting Editor of Shakespeare Quarterly, and Editor (with Paul Werstine) of the New Folger Library Shakespeare. She holds a master’s degree in English literature from the University of Virginia, a Ph.D. in English literature from Auburn University, and Doctorates of Humane Letters from Amherst College, St. Johns University, and Washington College. Before coming to the Folger, she acted as Hollifield Professor of English Literature at Auburn University and was Dean of Washington College.

Mowat’s return to WC sets the scene for the Drama Department’s upcoming production of King Lear.  Running April 4 through 7, the faculty-student collaboration will feature Professor Tim Maloney as King Lear and Associate Professor Jason Rubin as designer and director.

This event is part of the Sophie Kerr Lecture Series. For information on other upcoming events, click here, or visit www.washcoll.edu
