The Presidential Race Is On

Location: Hynson Lounge

October 03, 2012
Washington College is embracing the final leg of the presidential race as a teaching moment, hosting an array of domestic and foreign policy experts from across the political spectrum to share their opinions with students, faculty, and community members.

Sponsored by the C.V. Starr Center for the Study of the American Experience and the Louis L. Goldstein Program in Public Affairs, The Anatomy of an Electin is a special series on American politics examineing four key elements of an election: money, politics, technology, and the media.

“As a leading liberal arts institution, we have a special responsibility to do three important things,” remarked College President Mitchell Reiss. “First, we have a responsibility to encourage people with different political views and ideological perspectives to speak their minds, and provide a space where they can do so with civility. After all, intellectual discussion and lively debate are the lifeblood of any great academic institution.

“Second, we have a responsibility to become actively engaged—to learn about the issues, to volunteer and work for a candidate, and above all, to vote.

“And third, because our role is not to teach people what to think but rather to teach them how to think critically for themselves, our collective task is to help our students discover what their own individual purpose and passion might be.”

The series wraps up October 23 with a discussion of the role of the media. The participants include Jack Bohrer ’06, a contributor to The New Republic and Salon; Betsy Fischer, executive producer of Meet the Press; James Hohmann, national political correspondent for Politico; and Jonathan Martin, correspondent for Politico. The talk begins at 5:30 pm in Hynson Lounge, Hodson Hall.
