The men’s and women’s swimming team look to continue their success from last season.

The swimming season starts on Saturday, October 21st as both teams open their dual-meet schedule at Division I Delaware.

Women’s Swimming:

Coming off of their best performance at the Centennial Conference Championships in seven years, the Shorewomen look to keep the positive momentum going. Last year, the team placed fourth in the final team standings while being awarded 10 medals.

The Shorewomen are led by six seniors, including Jenni Clune who won three individual and three relay medals at conference championships while taking gold in the 100 breaststroke. Clune also holds the conference and school record in that same event.

Senior Katie Gorman is another senior who picked up four relay medals at last year’s Centennial Championships. She finished fifth in the conference in the 50 and 100 freestyle.

The junior class is highlighted by Julia Portmann, who claimed silver in the 500 freestyle and bronze in the 200 and 1650 freestyles. Portmann also collected a pair of relay medals at the conference championships.

2nd year head coach Matt Harris feels the women’s team can continue the success of last year’s campaign.

“Our women’s team is looking to build on last year’s success and establish some conference-best swims this coming year.  We had many places within the top 3, but we are hoping to add more to that number this year as most of the pieces from last year’s 4th place team return again for the 2017-2018 season,” he said. “Great leadership has really gotten this group of ladies to where they are, and we have a strong senior class and three very committed captains that will continue that trend into a competitive season.”

Men’s Swimming:

After a fifth-place finish at last year’s Centennial Conference Championships, the men’s team has good reason for optimism heading into their season. The team returns seven medalists as well as 9 freshman.

This years senior class includes two swimmers, Kevin Mackenzie and Cody Weiler. Mackenzie is the team’s reigning MVP as he won two individual medals and three relay medals at last year’s conference championships. Weiler followed with three relay medals, as well.

Kevin Mackenzie steps into a leadership role in his senior season.

The junior class also holds two swimmers in Karl Melchior and Josh Samuels. Melchior won a bronze medal in the 200 freestyle relay in last years conference championship.

Harris feels the team has a distribution of talent throughout each class.

“On the men’s side we bring back a very talented group of upperclassmen with 8 freshmen and two transfers joining us.  The men’s team is very young, at 17 freshmen and sophomores, so we are very excited to see what the future holds for us,” he explained.”While our class is very strong, I know several other teams in the conference brought in very strong freshman classes as well with similar times to ours, so this will make for an exciting dual meet season and an even more exciting conferences.”
