CHESTERTOWN, MD—On Tuesday, April 8, the Washington College History Department will host historian Seth Rockman for a discussion of how slavery shaped American capitalism. Rockman, a professor of history at Brown University, will speak at 4:30 p.m. in Litrenta Lecture Hall, Toll Science Center. The event is free and open to the public.

Rockman’s lecture, “Northern Manufacturing, Southern Slavery: The Antebellum Origins of American Business Ethics,” is the 2013-2014 installment of the Guy F. Goodfellow Memorial Lecture Series. A prolific writer and speaker, Rockman has produced countless scholarly articles and reviews as well as two books. His most recent work, Scraping By: Wage Labor, Slavery, and Survival in Early Baltimore, was awarded prizes from the Organization of American Historians, the Southern Historical Association, and others. Rockman appears frequently at conferences and seminars across the country and has served on various editorial boards for historical publications.

The Guy F. Goodfellow Memorial Lecture Series was established in 1989 to honor the memory of a history professor who taught at Washington College for three decades. Each year the series brings a distinguished historian to campus to lecture and spend time with students in emulation of Goodfellow’s vibrant teaching style.
