Soccer Star Scores Literary Prizes
Tim Marcin ’13 may be used to breaking records on the soccer field but this scholar-athlete did something that no other student at the College has ever done before. He took home both the Veryan Beacham and William Warner literary prizes in Spring 2012. An English major, Marcin has made quite a name for himself as a writer. Not only is he the sports editor for The Elm, his creative work is excellent. The Veryan Beacham Prize is given to a Washington College junior for excellent writing that reflects and helps shape a greater understanding about vital issues in civic life, culture and society. He submitted a poem about a soldier reading Nick Flynn and Walt Whitman. “I imagined what he would have come up with while reading the same things I was reading. I was thinking about the soldier trying to find answers in the literature because it’s hard to make sense of the situation from inside of it. I saw a connection between Whitman and Flynn and where their thoughts on torture converge.” Marcin’s inspiration for his Warner Prize submission stemmed from his Transcendentalism class. “I ended up writing about Camp Qoowant, a summer camp I loved.” This story scored the prize given to a Washington College undergraduate who shows the greatest aptitude for writing about nature and the environment. While Marcin has a passion for all types of writing he hopes to minor in creative writing.
