Reiss and MICUA Peers Honor Mikulski
WASHINGTON, DC—Washington College President Mitchell B. Reiss joined his peers in the Maryland Independent College and University Association (MICUA) at a meeting February 4 in the U.S. Capitol where they honored Senator Barbara Mikulski for her “outstanding leadership on behalf of higher education in Maryland.”
Mikulski was presented with the 2013 MICUA President’s Award, which MICUA president Tina Bjarekull describes as “the highest honor bestowed by the MICUA Board, presented to individuals who have earned the Board’s deepest respect and esteem.”
MICUA Board Chair Kevin Manning of Stevenson University lauded the Senator’s efforts to support student financial aid, academic research and expanded educational opportunities for military veterans.
“I am so proud to represent Maryland and the people of the educational mosaic that’s in our great state,” Senator Mikulski said after her meeting with the college presidents. “It is my job to help Maryland’s colleges and universities do what they’re best at – which is educating our next generation. Education is the opportunity ladder of this nation. Every child deserves their chance to climb that ladder. I will continue fighting to ensure that Maryland students have access to quality, affordable higher education.”
Mikulski is the senior U.S. Senator from Maryland and has served in Congress for more than 35 years. She is the first Marylander and the first woman to serve as Chair of the Senate Appropriations Committee, the longest-serving woman in the history of the U.S. Congress, and the Dean of Women in the Senate.
Established in 1971, MICUA fosters cooperative efforts among its member institutions and all segments of higher education. As the voice of independent higher education in Maryland, it seeks to inform the broader public about its member institutions and the importance of independent colleges and universities to the future of Maryland and the nation. Recent past recipients of the MICUA President’s Award include Maryland Treasurer Nancy Kopp and Maryland State Senator Edward Kasemeyer, Chair of the Senate Budget and Taxation Committee.
