CHESTERTOWN, MD—In celebration of National Poetry month, the Kent County Arts Council, Bookplate bookstore and Washington College’s Office of the Dean are partnering to present “Poetry Festival VI” as part of downtown Chestertown’s “First Friday” event April 5. The informal poetry reading will run from 4 to 7 p.m. at The Bookplate, 112 S. Cross Street.
The festival invites any member of the public to sign up to read or recite a favorite verse aloud in front of what festival coordinator Robert Earl Price describes as a “diverse, untethered audience wandering in and out.”
“The fest is not a three-hour marathon,” adds Price, a poet and playwright who is artist in residence in the drama department at Washington College. “To the contrary, participants often sit and listen for a spell and enjoy our refreshments before moving on to other First Friday events. Hardcore poets, readers, reciters, listeners and the curious all wander in and out freely.”
Hosts for the event are musician and woodworker Bob Ortiz and actress Polly Sommerfeld, who teaches drama at the College. Readers or reciters of verse are asked to request a time slot for their presentation by contacting Bookplate at 410-778-4167, registering on one of the signup sheets posted around town, or emailing to poetry@washcoll.edu
