While most of Goose Nation was sound asleep last Saturday morning, the brothers of Kappa Sigma were whipping up pancakes for two great causes—the Military Heroes Campaign and prostate cancer research.

On a crisp Saturday morning in October, members of the Kappa Sigma fraternity hosted their 20th annual Pancake Breakfast at Emmanuel Church in downtown Chestertown. Preparations began as early as 5 a.m., and doors opened at 8 a.m. sharp. Pancakes weren’t the only thing on the menu though; the brothers also served scrambled eggs, French toast, bacon, sausage and Tater Tots.

The Kappa Sigma brothers served a hungry crowd. The Kappa Sigma brothers served a hungry crowd. They raised $3,015, which will be split between their two charities – Military Heroes Campaign and the prostate cancer research group at the University of Virginia (UVA). Later this semester, the entire chapter is planning to visit UVA to experience first-hand the difference that their donations have made.

“In the past, we have visited and volunteered at veteran facilities to see how we are helping, and we are planning on doing this again in the future,” says Jack Nevins ’19, president of Kappa Sigma.

Not only is this event a staple for the brothers, Nevins noted that it is also a great time for the College and community to come together. Many local families stop by for breakfast after a visit to the Farmers’ Market, and professors come to support the brothers and philanthropy, as well.
