A powerhouse on the hockey field and in the classroom, Emily Eline ’15 is on her way to pharmacy school at the University of Maryland.

You can never tell where inspiration will come from—a teacher, a friend, a teammate, even a stranger. In the case of Emily Eline ’15, the motivation to pursue a career in pharmacy came from her sister, who suffered from epilepsy.

“I was always going to doctors and pharmacists with my family and with her, so I was always interested in how these pills would manage her epilepsy,” she says. “I knew that’s what I wanted to do.”

Finishing up her bachelor’s degree in biology this spring at Washington College, and already accepted at University of Maryland’s School of Pharmacy for the coming fall, Eline is one step closer to her goal. She came to Washington College, she says, because of its dual-degree pharmacy program with UMD, which enabled her to earn her undergraduate degree in three years while covering the prerequisites needed to apply to the UMD program. After four years there, she will graduate with a doctor of pharmacy degree (Pharm.D), earning two degrees in seven years.

“The teachers give you a schedule of exactly the classes you need, and a layout of what you need to take each year, so you don’t have a lot of wiggle room if this is what you want to do,” Eline says, though she notes that she did enjoy distribution classes in German and art history, among others. “The science department is really great. The professors are always there to help you, they’re really flexible and always there to meet with you.”

The other big draw to Washington College, she says, was its field hockey team, and Eline has made the most of her three years on the field, too. Now team captain, she’s a three-time National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Scholar of Distinction and was named three times to the NFHCA National Academic Squad. She’s twice been on the Centennial Conference Academic Honor Roll, and in 2013 made the Centennial Conference All-Sportsmanship Team.

Elsewhere on campus, Eline participates in Relay for Life, is a Character Counts coach, a Student-Athlete mentor, a Cater Society Fellow, a John S. Toll Fellow, and a participant in Habitat for Humanity.

Eline is philosophical about leaving in three years rather than the typical four for undergraduates, and she’s pleased with what WAC has offered her.

“My communications skills are a lot better because of our small classes; you’re talking with professors one-on-one, you’re doing group projects, you’re meeting outside of class,” she says. “I think we’re more well-rounded coming from a small liberal arts school, where in a bigger school you’re only getting math and the sciences, and you hardly know your professors.”
