WC adds two new area coordinators in Residential Life.

Two new staff members have been added to our Residential Life team, serving as Washington College’s first area coordinators (ACs). Nakia Johnson and Kailey Feuerstein-Chartier are already having a positive impact on the students, and their presence has already been noted and appreciated by many.

What are area coordinators? In the world of campus housing, area coordinators are professional, full-time staff in charge of an area of residence halls. Most, like our first two ACs, have master’s degrees in higher education and have been specifically trained and experience in working with the college student population.

Area coordinators have multiple facets to their positions. They are in charge of coordinating maintenance and housekeeping response to issues, and meeting with and advising students who need help or referrals to other offices. They hold students accountable to the honor code and community standards, and the supervise the resident assistants (RAs).They also manage room changes and mediate roommate conflicts when the RAs require assistance. ACs also oversee community development through supervision of the RA planned events. Although RAs are there to assist residents with small, day-to-day issues and are a good place to start for help, it’s the area coordinators who manage and respond to more serious situations.

The ACs are also on an emergency duty rotation and are part of the after hours response efforts of resident assistants and Public Safety officers. This team responds to students in crisis during the evenings and weekends.
