The allure of Venice and decades of scholarship fuel Judy Kohl’s “Fireside Chat” November 13, 5 p.m.

CHESTERTOWN, MD— Washington College continues its celebration of Venice with an evening of culture and conversation on Wednesday, November 13. Judy Kohl, a former professor of English and Humanities at New York’s Duchess Community College, will offer “A Fireside Chat about Venice” at 5 p.m. in the Faculty Lounge on the first floor of Hodson Hall. The event is sponsored by Friends of the Miller Library and is free and open to the public.

In this intimate “Fireside Chat,” Kohl will share history about Venice’s expatriate community, along with her experiences in the city. Kohl and her late husband, Ben Kohl, a scholar of medieval and Renaissance Venice and Padua, made many trips to Venice over the past five decades.

This event occurs in conjunction with the exhibition of Venetian prints that will be on display in the Kohl Gallery through Dec. 10.  That show features an impressive collection of etchings of Venice made by some of the finest printmakers of the first half of the twentieth century.

The lecture series on Venice will conclude December 4 with the exhibition’s curator Eric Denker and author and columnist Judith Martin. The two will chat about their shared love of Venice and their experiences living in La Serenissima, which they captured in their book No Vulgar Hotel: the Desire and Pursuit of Venice. That event, “An Afternoon in Venice with Judith Martin,” will take place in Decker Theatre at 4 p.m. followed by a book signing.
