The Rose O’ Neill Literary House’s first Summer Literary Salon on May 24 features poets Joseph Harrison and Tess Taylor, plus new local band Twice the Other.
The first of the Rose O’Neill Literary House’s Summer Literary Salon series features poetry readings by Joseph Harrison and Tess Taylor, as well as music from new local band Twice the Other. This first salon, on Tuesday May 24 at 4:30, will also debut two brand-new, limited-edition letterpress broadsides, featuring work from each of the presenting poets, in honor of this year’s series. Broadsides are printed on-site, by hand, in the Lit House print shop.
Joseph Harrison’s most recent volume of poetry, Shakespeare’s Horse, was published by Waywiser in 2015. His previous books were Someone Else’s Name (Waywiser, 2003; Zoo, 2004), which was named as one of five poetry books of the year by The Washington Post, and Identity Theft (Waywiser, 2008). Harrison’s poems have appeared in such anthologies and journals as The Best American Poetry 1998, 180 More Extraordinary Poems for Every Day, Boston Review, The Kenyon Review, The New Criterion, The Paris Review, Poetry Northwest, Southwest Review, and The Yale Review; and online at Poetry Daily and Poets.org. He has new poetry forthcoming in The New York Review of Books, and elsewhere. He received a 2005 Academy Award in Literature from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, and a 2009 Fellowship in Poetry by the Guggenheim Foundation.
Tess Taylor is the author of Work & Days and The Forage House, finalist for the Believer Poetry Award. An avid gardener and cook, she dropped out of Amherst College in her twenties to become a translator and chef’s assistant at L’Ecole Ritz Escoffier in Paris. Her poems and essays have appeared widely in publications including The New Yorker, The Academy of American Poets, and The New York Times. She is currently the on air poetry reviewer for NPR’s “All Things Considered,” and was most recently visiting professor of English and creative writing at Whittier College.
Twice the Other play an eclectic mix of songs, from the Beatles to Paramore, with powerful vocal harmonies and an infectious enthusiasm. The people behind the music are Marc Quigley, Steve Sherman, and Erin Ballard.
The next two events are June 28, and July 26, 2016. All three events are free and open to the public.
