Merkle, Inc. CEO David Williams has grown his marketing agency exponentially, keeping ahead of industry trends and helping corporate clients fine-tune their customer outreach. He speaks November 18 as part of the George Washington Leadership Series.

CHESTERTOWN, MD—David Williams, CEO of the international marketing firm Merkle, Inc. will speak at Washington College Tuesday, November 18, as part of the George Washington Leadership Series. His talk, “Have a Deep Keel: lessons in leadership in an ever-changing world,” will begin at 4:00 p.m. in Hynson Lounge, Hodson Hall, on the College campus, 300 Washington Avenue. It is free and open to the public.

Based in Columbia, Maryland, Merkle is the largest privately held customer-relationship marketing agency in the nation, and was the fastest growing agency of any discipline of 2013.  Williams became Merkle’s 24th employee when he bought the firm in 1988. Today the firm employs more than 2,000 people in 11 locations across the U.S., two in China and one in the United Kingdom. Over the past 25 years, as the industry has evolved, Merkle has transitioned from computer management of membership files and mailings to a data-driven firm that guides the digital marketing of corporate clients such as Geico, DirecTV, and American Express. “We are using information we know about consumers to try to put the most relevant ad before them,” he told the Baltimore Sun

Winning Workplaces and Fortune magazine named Williams one of America’s Best Bosses in 2006, and the following year Maryland Ernst and Young named him Entrepreneur of the Year. In 2012, Advertising Age included Merkle among its top 10 agencies to watch.

Williams, whose hobby is racing Porsches, holds a Bachelor of Science in business administration from Shippensburg University in Pennsylvania.
