Now working with CES, the history and environmental studies major is one of 15 students in the nation to be honored by the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History.

NEW YORK, NY (June 19, 2013) —Katherine Thornton, a 2013 graduate of Washington College, has been named one of 15 winners of the 2013 Gilder Lehrman History Scholar Award.  Selected from candidates across the country, the Award recognizes outstanding graduating college seniors who have demonstrated academic and extracurricular excellence in American History or American Studies.

Thornton made the most of her four years at Washington College, where she double majored in environmental studies and history and completed the holistic Chesapeake Semester. She served as president of the Douglass Cater Society of Junior Fellows, joined Phi Beta Kappa, participated in programs offered by the C.V. Starr Center for the Study of the American Experience and the Center for Environment and Society (CES), and took home the prestigious George Washington Medal at commencement as “the senior who shows the greatest promise of understanding and realizing in life and work the ideals of a liberal education.”

This summer Thornton is working for the CES as a field technician at the Chester River Field Research Station at Chino Farm, participating in the 15-year breeding study of grassland birds there. She is scheduled to become the Program and Intern Coordinator for the CES on August 1, 2013.

From June 7 through June 10,2013, the Gilder Lehrman Institute hosted Thornton and the other History Scholar Award winners in New York City for a series of special presentations that included meetings with eminent scholars, exclusive behind-the-scenes tours of historic archives, and an awards dinner. Museum and archive visits included stops at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Gilder Lehrman Collection, and the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, with talks and discussions led by Kenneth T. Jackson, Khalil Gibran Muhammad and Adrienne Petty.

Since 1994, The Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History has promoted history education through an array of national programs. It partners with Washington College and George Washington’s Mount Vernon in awarding the annual George Washington Book Prize to the year’s best book on the nation’s founding era.
