Heading for a Cold War with China?

CHESTERTOWN, MD—U.S. Naval War College professor Thomas Mahnken will join a Washington College panel Wednesday, April 8, to discuss “The Rise of China and the Potential for a Cold War with the U.S.” Washington College senior Kevin Lair, whose senior thesis addresses the topic, will moderate. Participants also will include Andrew Oros, an associate professor of political science and international studies who specializes in East Asia.
The talk will take place in Hynson Lounge, Hodson Hall, at 6:00 p.m. and is free and open to the public.
Thomas Mahnken is Jerome Levy Chair of Economic Geography and National Security and professor of strategy at the Naval War College in Newport, Rhode Island. He worked as the Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Policy Planning from 2006-2009, providing strategy advice within the Office of the Secretary of Defense. He also served on the staff of the Quadrennial Defense Review Independent Panel and the Commission on the Intelligence Capabilities of the United States Regarding Weapons of Mass Destruction. Mahnken has authored several books, most recently Technology and the American Way of War Since 1945.
Kevin Lair is a senior at Washington College, where he is majoring in political science with a concentration in global business and minoring in economics and pre-law. He is currently interning as a legislative assistant to the House Republican Caucus in the Maryland General Assembly. He is co-president and a founding member of the Alexander Hamilton Society on campus and serves as the Eastern Shore Regional Director of the Maryland Federation of College Republicans.
