“Have You Been Injured?”

Location: Hynson Lounge

March 21, 2013
In March 21 talk on ethics, attorney Jayne Conroy will bring stories from the front lines of a career litigating major product-liability cases.

CHESTERTOWN, MD—On Thursday, March 21, the Richard Holstein ’68 Ethics Program will present “Have You Been Injured?”, a lecture by New York attorney Jayne Conroy, co-founder of Hanley Conroy LLP.  A skilled litigator and strategist, Conroy will share her experience with high-profile product liability lawsuits involving the 9/11 terror attacks, the BP oil spill, Toyota and pharmaceutical giants such as Pfizer. The event begins at 5:30 p.m. in Hynson Lounge, Hodson Hall, on the Washington College campus, 300 Washington Avenue. It is free and open to the public.

For many years Conroy acted as national trial and coordinating defense counsel to a multi-national corporation and several of its subsidiaries. In recent years she has represented plaintiffs exclusively in a wide variety of product-liability matters, most recently those involving pharmaceuticals. Her practice has brought actions on behalf of several thousand plaintiffs who were administered the drugs Actos, OxyContin, Zelnorm, Zyprexa, Vioxx, Celebrex, Bextra, Ephedra, Chantix, Yazmin and Yaz, as well as those injured by gadolinium contrast dyes and medical devices such as DePuy artificial hips. Since 2006, she has been credited with recovering some $300 million in damages.

On behalf of 9/11 victims and their families, Conroy sued the financial sponsors of terrorism and helped forge substantial settlements against airlines and airport security companies.

A graduate of Dartmouth College and the New England School of Law, Conroy worked in U.S. District Courts throughout New York and the District of Columbia before forming Hanley Conroy LLP in 2002. She is Chair of the Products Liability Committee of the New York City Bar Association.

Her lecture is sponsored by the Holstein Ethics Committee at Washington College, founded by 1968 alumnus Richard Holstein to encourage students to examine the ethical aspects of their actions.
