Field Hockey Clinches Berth to Centennial Conference Tournament

October 12, 2017
Behind back-to-back overtime victories, the Shorewomen clinched a spot in the conference tournament.

Following consecutive overtime victories on the road, the Shorewomen find themselves in a good position having already clinched a spot in this year’s Centennial Conference Tournament.

With four straight victories in conference play, the team holds an impressive 6-1 in-conference record, something that hasn’t been done since 2002. Behind those six wins includes three overtime victories.

Under the direction of first year head coach Annie Kietzman, WC has been able to find a spot in the tournament for the 10th time in program history. After missing out the past two seasons, the Shorewomen comfortably sit in a good position to potentially host their first-round game with four games remaining on the schedule.

The senior class enters their second conference tournament with great optimism for the remainder of the season. Of those five seniors, includes Katie Arnold and Courtney Rainey, who both feel that the team’s hard work has paid off.

“Clinching a playoff spot this early in the season is just a reflection of the work we have put in this season,” Arnold explained. “Every win we have had has been a collective effort and I am so proud of each and everyone of my teammates.”

“We are incredibly excited on getting a playoff spot this early in the season. We have worked incredibly hard to get to this point,” Rainey said. “We have brought the culture that we have always had off the field, onto the field. Every game whether we get scored on, score first or go in to overtime we regroup and come together as a team and figure out how we can adapt. I think this team’s mentality on the field is what makes the difference.”

The positive mentality from the senior class has trickled down on players including junior goalie Morgan Domanico. With 82 on the saves in just 13 games, she has been a key contributor in all of the close games WC has played in. Domanico is excited for what the next few weeks hold.

“Moving ahead we’re going to keep our momentum forward. We have the next two weeks to prepare for playoffs while also focusing on solidifying our placement with the next few big games up ahead,” she said. “To get the outcome we’re hungry for, we’re going to keep our fire going.”

The Shorewomen will play host in their next three games, starting this Sunday versus #13 Franklin & Marshall. To finish regular season play, they will travel to Muhlenberg on Friday, October 27th.

The Centennial Conference First Round game is slated for November 1st.
