CHESTERTOWN, MD—The Chester River Waterfront Festival returns to Wilmer Park on Saturday, September 20, offering an afternoon of music, food and family fun that includes the popular Cardboard Boat Regatta.
Sponsored by the Center for Environment & Society (CES) at Washington College, this eighth annual Festival will take place from noon to 4 p.m., with the Regatta kicking off at 3 p.m. Afterward, the annual Phi Delta Theta crab feast ($25 a person) will begin on the lawn of the Washington College Boat House.
The Waterfront Festival will fill Wilmer Park with music from the Michael Butler Band, food vendors offering pit beef, fried fish, and ice cream, educational displays by environmental groups, pony rides, model boats, sailing, kayaking, and river tours aboard the research vessel Callinectes ($5).
To register a team for the cardboard boat race, contact CES program coordinator Kathy Thornton at kthornton2@washcoll.edu or find the registration form on the CES website: http://www.washcoll.edu/centers/ces. The Web site also offers guidelines and tips on building a seaworthy cardboard boat.
The Center for Environment & Society will hold a free workshop for cardboard boat builders on Sunday, September 14, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the lawn of the Custom House, 101 S. Water Street. For more information on the workshop, email kthornton2@washcoll.edu or call 410-810-7162.
