Dining Services Scores Silver for Green!

April 22, 2014
In a nation-wide competition, Washington College has been recognized for the sustainability education and outreach  projects the dining services staff creates with campus partners.

CHESTERTOWN, MD – Washington College has earned Silver Honors in the 2014 Sustainability Awards presented by the National Association of College and University Food Services (NACUFS). The Sustainability Awards annually recognize and honor member institutions that have demonstrated outstanding leadership in the promotion and implementation of environmental sustainability.

More than 55 colleges and universities across North America submitted entries in four categories, including Procurement Practices, Outreach and Education, Waste Management, and Energy and Water Conservation. Judges were drawn from  collegiate dining professionals including foodservice directors and sustainability coordinators. “Sustainability is a growing trend in foodservice,” said committee chair Sheryl Kidwell of the University of Kansas. “Dining services play a pivotal role in the overall sustainability goals of a campus.”

Washington College is the only liberal arts college to be recognized with an award, placing Silver in the Outreach and Education category in between gold winner University of Montana and Bronze finisher North Carolina State.

“Competing for one of these awards builds a sense of pride and team spirit for our staff,” says WC’s director of dining services, Zena Maggitti. “Plus, we learn from other schools. Sharing creativity and knowledge with other foodservice professionals is a key component to NACUFS membership. We are excited to see results here from our partnership with two campus groups – the staff of the Center for Environment & Society and the Student Environmental Alliance – as we  educate and advocate together.
