CHESTERTOWN, MD— Most of us watch revolutions on the evening news. Award-winning poet Jehanne Dubrow experienced one firsthand as an adolescent. On Wednesday, February 13, she will share her writing about that time in her life when the C.V. Starr Center for the American Experience presents “Red Army Red: A Poetry Reading by Jehanne Dubrow.”

The reading will take place at 5:30 p.m. in Hynson Lounge at Hodson Hall. A book signing and reception will follow. The event is free and open to the public.

Red Army Red (TriQuarterly Books, 2012), a cycle of autobiographical poems, chronicles Dubrow’s coming of age as the daughter of U.S. diplomats in Poland during the country’s dramatic transition from communism to capitalism in the 1980s. The book’s cover image, a phalanx of upright bullets packed around an open, red-tipped lipstick, vividly conveys the oppressive culture at work during Dubrow’s adolescence. “Red Army Red takes a remembered childhood behind the Iron Curtain and transforms its shadows and deprivations into the saturated colors of poetry,” said the poet Mary Jo Salter.

Author of four poetry collections, Dubrow serves as Director of the Rose O’Neill Literary House at Washington College and teaches creative writing and literature as a member of the English Department faculty. She was born in Italy and grew up in Yugoslavia, Zaire, Poland, Belgium, Austria, and the United States. Her many honors include the Poetry Society of America’s 2012 Alice Fay Di Castagnola Award, an Individual Artist’s Award from the Maryland State Arts Council, and a Walter E. Dakin Fellowship and Howard Nemerov Poetry Scholarship from the Sewanee Writers’ Conference.
