For an intimate look at Division III sports, filmmaker Kurt Kolaja followed the Shoremen through their 2013 season. The film premiered Sept. 21 at the Chesapeake Film Festival.

EASTON, MD — We Are D3, a feature-length documentary produced and directed by independent filmmaker Kurt Kolaja and featuring the Washington College men’s basketball team, premiered Saturday afternoon, September 21, at the Avalon Theatre in Easton as part of the 2013 Chesapeake Film Festival.

We Are D3 captures the essence of intercollegiate athletics at the Division III level while it follows the Washington College men’s basketball team through its season. The film focuses heavily on Coach Rob Nugent and the seniors on the team, but also includes interviews with many others, including Director of Athletics Bryan Matthews, NCAA officials, a referee, parents of players, and the team’s student manager.

In text that accompanies the film’s trailer, Kolaja, who lives in Queen Anne’s County, writes, “These student-athletes are not going to turn pro, they don’t get on TV, they receive no scholarship money to play the game. They do it simply because they want to … After it is all said and done, they leave college with a diploma and enough memories to fill an arena.”

Rather than releasing We Are D3 through theaters, Kolaja is offering it for rent ($5 for one week’s access) or purchase ($15 per download) on his website, www.kurtdocs.com
