Back in the Swim, Better than Ever
Location: Eugene B. Casey Swim Center
CHESTERTOWN, MD— Washington College reopens its Eugene B. Casey Swim Center with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and guided tours on Sunday, April 12, beginning at noon. The ceremony, which is free and open to the public, will mark the end of a million-dollar renovation that added new dressing rooms for the men’s and women’s teams, plus a stretching room and study lounge.
The renovation was funded by the Eugene B. Casey Foundation, which was created by the late husband of alumna Betty Brown Casey ’47. Through their long association with Washington College, the Caseys and their Foundation have supported hundreds of student scholarships and transformed the campus with gifts that have built and/or renovated the Casey Academic Center, the Swim Center, Brown Cottage, and the Rose O’Neill Literary House.
Kim Lessard, coach of both the men’s and women’s swim teams, says the new swim center
amenities will support her swimmers’ “great reputation as true student-athletes.”
This year, the men’s team ranked eighth in the nation for their academics as student-athletes
among DIII teams, with the women’s team close behind. The renovation also will help
with recruiting future team members. The new study lounge, stretching room and locker
rooms show recruits, “Wow, Washington College really has taken an interest in providing
a better student-athlete experience,” says Lessard. “It gets them excited about the
direction we’re going.”
Lessard, who was announced as winner of a President’s Distinguished Service Award at the George Washington’s Birthday Convocation in February, will receive the actual award and be recognized at the April 12 event. (She was out of town with the swim team the day of the Convocation).
Individual swim-team members will take part in the ceremony by helping cut the ribbon, making remarks and leading tours of the new facilities. A light reception will follow.
